Professor Ibrahim Hoteit, Professor in Earth Science and one of the leading researchers in ocean and climate modelling at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), has been named a recipient of the distinguished 2020 Kuwait Prize. Awarded by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), the Kuwait Prize is one of the most prestigious scientific honors in the Arab world, recognizing outstanding contributions that advance science and benefit society.
Kuwait's Prize was established in 1979, in fulfillment of the objectives of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) in supporting scientific research in various fields, and encouraging Arab scholars and researchers. KFAS has dedicated prizes in five fields; four of these fields are announced annually (Basic Sciences, Applied Sciences, Economics, and Social Sciences, Art and literature), and the fifth field, which is (Arabic and Islamic Scientific Heritage) will be announced every three years.
Prof. Hoteit received the award in the Field of Basic Sciences (Earth Sciences) for his pioneering research in ocean modelling, remote sensing, and Red Sea eddy dynamics. His work has significantly advanced the understanding of ocean circulation and environmental processes in the region and beyond. He is also recognized for developing innovative data assimilation and modelling techniques that have become essential tools for improving climate and environmental predictions with global relevance.
The award underscores Prof. Hoteit’s influential role in shaping modern oceanographic research and environmental forecasting. His contributions support critical applications ranging from climate change assessments and disaster risk reduction to the sustainable management of marine and coastal resources.
Originally published by KFAS, the announcement highlighted the Crown Prince of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who endorsed the selection of the 2020 laureates.
