The Marine Environmental Research Center, a strategic partnership between KAUST and Saudi Aramco, serves as the first oceanic observatory capable of monitoring the Red Sea's physical and biological environments. Ibrahim Hoteit, Associate Professor of Earth Science and Engineering at KAUST, leads research on the long-term monitoring and modeling of oceanic and atmospheric circulation in the region.
In the context of the center's work, Hoteit noted, βTo make viable predictions, we need to draw on knowledge of how the Red Sea behaves as a whole.β His team's research is crucial for understanding circulation patterns, which could be vital in responding to environmental disasters, such as oil spills. Through the observatory, Hoteit and his colleagues aim to develop more accurate prediction models for the Red Sea's response to both catastrophic events and long-term climate changes.
