The work to be undertaken under Phase 1 is an ambitious set of 8 research studies that are closely aligned with the vision underlying NEOM’s Climate Change Research Program and Climate Action Plan. Specifically, the proposed research studies will address the consequences of climate change at multiple spatial scales and across atmospheric and ocean systems. The results of the work will contribute to an improved understanding of climate-induced changes to the atmosphere and ocean environment in the NEOM and surrounding region. Such knowledge is necessary to formulate effective climate change response strategies and to codify such strategies into a comprehensive climate action plan that can be an effective guide for future investors; all within the context of and consistent with subsequent regulatory and compliance requirements. Ultimately, the results of the studies can help inform and help guide climate resilient, green growth investment decisions for the NEOM region in the coming years.
The research programme represents a timely and strategic initiative that can help planners, innovators and decision-makers in the NEOM region better understand critical stakes posed by climate change and the range of options available to them. The eight studies in Phase 1 represent an organizing framework to engage partners and stakeholders within and beyond the NEOM region on issues that are widely considered to be high priority, while also involving researchers and organizations that can facilitate replication in other regions of the world. Ultimately, the broader impact of the programme rests on its potential to develop and provide access to useable, high quality environmental data within the context of serving the needs of coordinated decision-making about adaptation to climate change in the NEOM region and in the Red Sea region.
